Grief is as unique as each of us in our family experiences. The subject of grief and loss has transformed from what many of us understood and learned grief to be. Many are now viewing grief through the lenses of the human experience and are suggesting moving away from the medical model of grief and loss. Using grief theory in your clinical practice helps you, the clinician, to better support your griever, but also helps the griever to move through grief understanding their experiences without feeling guilty for how they experience their grief or without feeling as if they must “get over” or “let go” of what they have lost. Current modalities in grief supports the griever continuing their bonds; and paying attention to their recovery and who they are becoming because of their loss.

There has always been some type of mental illness diagnosis. Substance use disorders (SUDs) however, begun to be classified as a primary diagnosis in the DSM-III. Then, and even now, treatment for drug or alcohol use disorder was done separately from mental illness disorders, often at separate facilities, using entirely different approaches. The disorders were treated individually, or one missed altogether. Consequently, many people who suffered from mental illnesses like Anxiety, Depression and Bipolar disorders never received treatment for Substance Use disorders, or vice versa. This created crucial gaps in treating the needs of those with the two categories of disorders and the actual care received. Clinicians continue to treat one disorder at a time as they do not feel equipped; they are not trained to manage or treat a substance use disorder and out of fear do not address this issue at all, or if they had some training, they do not feel adequately or appropriately trained. There continues to be a perception that substance use disorder is difficult to treat due to relapse rate.
Participants will be able to:

Since the start of the pandemic, 84% of adults reported feeling at least one emotion associated with prolonged stress, according to the American Psychological Association. The recent pandemic has made us all aware of the importance of the proverbial “elephant in the room”- prolonged stress. If unmanaged, stress will be felt not only by you, but also by those in your sphere of influence. Stress produces visible and invisible by products of which many of us are unaware. We know we are not our usual selves, but we cannot put our “finger on it”. Unless we begin to address the “elephant in the room”, many will become more ill.
Participants will:
· Understand the impact of stress on our bodies
· Identify signs and sources of stress from life-roles
· Develop appropriate responses to change
· Learn and develop effective strategies to minimize stress
Identify stressors experienced by employed individuals
